Why won’t my squishy slow-rise anymore?
A squishy stops slow-rising because something has changed either the foam inside it or the skin on the outside, and the usual suspects are heat, sunlight, water, wear, a split in the surface, or a coat of varnish. One more possibility sits outside that list: the squishy was never a slow-rise squishy at all.
Here is the simple version. A slow-rise squishy is open-cell polyurethane foam, the same family as memory foam. Press it and the air seeps out of thousands of tiny cells; let go and the air seeps back in, slowly, which is the rise you like to watch. Anything that makes the foam springier, blocks the air, or lets it rush through changes that pace. Most of the time the change is small and temporary. Some of the time it is permanent, and it is worth knowing which is which before you throw a favorite away.
Is it just warm?
If your squishy has started rising fast, the first thing to check is temperature, because warm foam is softer and springier than cool foam. A squishy that has been in a hot car, on a sunny windowsill, or squeezed through a long afternoon in a warm hand will recover noticeably quicker than it did on a cool morning.
This is the one cause that fixes itself. Put the squishy somewhere shaded and room-temperature, leave it alone for a few hours, and press it again. Most of the slow rise comes back. The same physics runs the other way: a squishy on a cold sill drags its feet, and a chilly squishy is easy to mistake for a broken one. Has it been in the sun?
Sunlight is the quiet killer of foam. Ultraviolet light breaks down polyurethane over weeks and months, and the signs are a yellow or brown tinge, a surface that feels harder or tackier than it did, and a rise that has gone fast, uneven, or stopped. Unlike warmth, this does not reverse when you bring the squishy indoors; the material itself has changed.
The fix here is prevention. Keep squishies out of direct light: a drawer, a bag, a shelf away from the window. A squishy that lives on a sunny desk will age years in a single summer. If yours has already yellowed and gone stiff, it is not dangerous in itself, but foam that has started to flake or crumble is past its useful life and should not be kept around small children or pets.
Did it get wet?
Open-cell foam is a sponge. Soak a slow-rise squishy, in a sink, a bath, a rainstorm, a washing machine, and water fills the cells that air is supposed to occupy. The squishy turns heavy and limp, takes days to dry, and often never recovers its original pace, because the soaking and the slow drying change the foam and can leave it musty inside.
This is why the care note on every foam squishy we sell says to spot-clean with a barely-damp cloth and air dry fully, and never to soak. If yours did get drenched, press out as much water as you gently can with a towel, set it somewhere airy and shaded, and give it several days. Do not use a hairdryer or a radiator, which combines the water problem with the heat problem. A squishy that still smells damp after a week should go.
Is the skin split?
Run a thumb around the squishy and look for a tear, a crack at a seam, or a patch where the painted surface has lifted. The skin is part of how a slow-rise squishy works: it limits how quickly air moves in and out of the foam. Once it splits, air rushes through the gap, and the squishy rises faster near the damage and sometimes stays dented on the other side.
Tears cannot be repaired in a way that restores the feel. Glue stiffens the area; tape peels. Most skin splits come from fingernails, sharp edges in a bag, or a pet, so the preventive move is to press with the pads of your fingers and keep squishies away from keys and claws. A torn squishy is still safe to squeeze if the foam is intact, but it has become a fast-rise squishy, and it will get worse.
Did someone varnish it?
Squishy painting is a hobby of its own, and the step that goes wrong most often is the finish. A thick or stiff coat of varnish, sealant, or glue closes the surface that air needs to pass through. The result is a squishy that rises poorly, cracks along the coat when pressed, or holds a dent for a long time. Very thin, flexible coats are less harmful, and some crafters accept a slower rise as the price of a decorated squishy, but any coating changes the feel, and a heavy one ends it.
If you are decorating a squishy and want to keep the slow rise, use the thinnest flexible layer you can, test on the underside first, and let it cure fully before pressing. If you want the original feel, the safest finish is none at all.
Was it ever a slow-rise squishy?
Some squishies are not foam. A translucent, jelly-like, or stretchy squishy is almost always TPR or silicone gel, and those materials spring back instantly by design. They are squishies in the everyday sense, and they are lovely to squeeze, but they never slow-rise and were never meant to. So if yours has snapped straight back since the day it arrived, check the material before assuming damage. Foam is matte, opaque, and light for its size, and the product page will say slow-rising or slow-rise. If a squishy is sold as slow-rise, is clearly foam, and still bounces back out of the box, that is a quality problem, and you should tell the seller.

Two things are true at once: a slow-rise squishy is a small, steady ritual that many people find genuinely settling, and it is a foam object that ages, like a pillow or a mattress does. When the rise goes, the squishy has not failed you. It has just spent its slowness. Keep the next one cool, dry, and out of the sun, and it will keep that long exhale for a good while longer. Why does my squishy rise fast now when it used to be slow?
Most often, heat. Polyurethane foam softens and gets springier when it is warm, so a squishy that has been in a hot room, a sunny spot, or a warm hand for a long time recovers faster. Let it cool somewhere shaded and it usually slows down again. Heavy use over a long time also softens foam, which is ordinary wear rather than a defect.
Does varnish ruin slow-rising squishies?
It can. The slow rise depends on air moving in and out through the surface, so a thick, stiff coat of varnish or sealant can seal the foam and make it rise poorly, crack, or stay dented.
